Well, it's been a while. Actually almost a year. I have to apologize for keeping this blog empty, but there's a reason:

Last spring, life struck me hard with a major depression, which took me almost a year to recover from. It took away the beauty of the colors, almost every part of my life seemed to be a dull, joyless grey. But after fighting the hardest fight of my entire life, I'm glad to say these words...

It's good to be back! ;)

As you could imagine, I didn't paint a lot in 2011, but as I started feeling the love for the hobby again in the last couple of weeks, I was able to continue on some older projects. Take a look:

Fun with oil colours

I have been experimenting a lot with oil colors recently. It's a lot of fun, wet-in-wet technique at it's best.
Here's what I've done so far. Larger scale this time...

Random Male Action Hero Bust sculpted by Badsmile:

Highlander Warrior 12th - 13th Century by Pegaso, 75mm:
I did his right arm and breast and his knee with oil colours, as well as the leather. The rest was done in acrylics so far.
Still have to do his face in oils.

And another Deathkorp is finished too, but this was done in acrylics...

Mixed WIPs

I'm back with a lot of WIPs today. I hurt my leg when playing football,
so I currently have a lot of time sitting at home and painting.

I started with two old-school rhinos for the crimson fist. I tried-out the salt technique that Raffa showed on Massive Voodoo. Worked pretty well, but I need more
different sizes of grains to get a more convincing effect. Did a little freehand too on them. Those old models look way too boring wtihout them. ^^ Those other guys standing around are just some Death Korps troopers that I basecoated with my airbrush.

Then I tried the same technique on a Forge World Tau Battlesuit guy. Not too bad, but the effect doesn't look as good when you use warm colours for the armour. I'll only do a quick paintjob on this one.

The Angry Marine got some attention too. Unfortunatelly I have to redo the base, since I fucked up the mixing the 2-component-resin-water correctly. ^^ So the marine is currently on a piece of cork.

And, last but not least, I did some fresh mud on the base of Captain Rodriguez. I used Scorched Brown, water effect and dark brown pigments. I also applied a thin layer of dust with my airbrush.

Started doing some freehands on the shoulders and on the cloak. I did some scratches too, but I think I'll have to go with the sponge again. Painting them looks strange somehow. And all-in-all there need to be some stronger shadows. I'll have to work on that too

I started painting Capt. Rodriguez. I desaturated my standard crimson fist colour scheme a bit, 'cause
it was much to ...well... blue. ^^ It's a bit rough on some parts, but I intend to do a lot of weathering on this one, so I think the blendings are not too important right now. Just need to get a feel for the colours and the light...

Captain Rodriguez WIP

Hey there!

I'm back with some Crimson Fist stuff again. This time, I'd like to introduce a very special character: Terminator Captain Estéban Rodriguez, who fought so glouriously against an ork nob-mob, that he got promoted to the rank of captain.

This actually really happened in a game between me and my Crimson Fist playing customer. The Termiator Sergeant killed most of the orks and the waaghboss and after it was all over, he was the only one standing. :)

After getting my orkass whopped so badly, I promised to to a little "upgrade" on the model... for free!
I didn't change the original pose, but I stripped-off the paint, put the mini on a decent base and started working on a cape. (Every important Warhammer character needs a cape in my opinion. It makes them more superheroic ;))

So here's what I did so far. I used a 50/50 mix of Greenstuff and Milliput, which worked nicely. After I had the initial shape hardened out, I added some folds with some more fresh putty. Not perfect yet, but it already looks like a cape. ^^

I still need to sand it once more, to get a really smooth surface. I might add some more putty to the fold in the middle, since I'm not so happy with it yet.

I've almost finished one of the DK squads, just have to replace the
tip of one guy's gone. It broke of when I dropped it. :(

I also changed the the shoulder pads of the space wolves, didn't like the previous version...

I used decals by the way, my freehand skills are too bad to draw a good looking wolf head somehow :(

I wanted to start something big now, well, here's what I've done so far on my Big Squiggoth from Forge World. Just did some work with a sponge, using Vermin Brown and Scorched Brown on a white undercoat. Then the whole thing got a wash with Devlan Mud (a lot of Devlan Mud! ;))

Well, I took a short break in painting orks and finished a project I was working on for quite some time now. This is my first ever 100% self-sculpted mini (ok it's a bust, but a bust is still a mini ^^) and it was a really, really great feeling to paint something that was made by myself. :)

I have to thank Mati a.k.a. Badsmile from Massivevoodoo for everything he taught me at his sculpting classes, that I attendended this and last year. I still have a looooong way to go when it comes to sculpting, but it kinda took away the fear of just doing it. So.. thanks man! ;)

Tutorial - Ork Skin

Okay then, here's the first step-by-step for the ork skin I'm doing:

2 component priming, nothing special so far. ;)

Basecoat Gretching Green 1:2 Paint:Water

1st shadow Knarloc Green, 1:4 paint:water

2nd shadow Dark Sea Blue (you can use Hawk Turqouise with Black instead)

1st Highlight Gretchin Green + Bleached Bone

Pure Bleached Bone for the second Highlight.

Now I did a glaze with a mix of Knarloc Green + Warlock Purple to bring some life to the skin. (Sorry, forgot to shoot a picture here)

Some Chaos Black for the deepest shadows and the darklining.

For the last step I used some Ivory to paint some very bright higlights (especially in the face).

I'm finally doing some painting for myself again. Feels pretty good and akward at the same time, but I'm really enjoying this. I have started a Spaceork Project at Tabletopwelt.de (for those who are interested and speak german, here's the link http://www.tabletopwelt.de/forum/showthread.php?t=129670), which should mean there'll be 2000 points of orcs painted until september. ^^

Well, so far so good, here's what I've done so far, my Bigmek with Shokkattackgun (or whatever that crazy device is called in English ;))

sorry for the one-day-delay, couldn't find time yesterday for posting.

So... what happend this monday night? Let's have a look:

I was working on a Minotaur, one of the new Beastmen releases from GW. Although it's meant for the gaming table, I'm trying to give my best at this one. We're working on a beastmen-project at the moment (4 people are collecting one army ^^) and we need something that makes "BÄM!", you know. ;)

Darkezekiel was working on his Belphegor from Andrea Miniatures. He's really taking time on this one. ^^ (sorry, pics ain't good)

Monday Night Painting

Almost every monday night Darkezekiel, Muhani (from Massivevoodoo) and me meet for our weekly night of painting. I'd like to write a little review every week from now on about new painting and modelling projects, that we've got on the table.

Let's start with what happened yesterday...

I'm currently working on a space wolves terminator unit, standing on a showbase. This is still in a very early state though.

Since Spacewolves need beards and long hair (I totally disagree with GWs new Spacewolf-image) I started modelling some on the units leader:

...and the Ice Cream Guy (just couldn't take this one seriously^^)

Darkezekiel did some turbopainting again (I still can't believe how fast this guy is) and tried three, let's say "interesting", color schemes for a friends tyranid army, using effect-colors. (YES, our friend likes flashing colors ^^)

Muhani, as always, took his time and modelled a bird for his sinking-ship-project. This took the whole evening, but therefor it was done properly.

Converted Slaanesh Chariot

Some weeks ago I got to do a commission for a Slaanesh Chariot conversion. I used parts from GW's plastic daemonettes as well as chaosbeasts made by Gamezone on a Khemri chariot. I tried to paint it with a very limitted palette, to give it a feeling of midnight and moonshine. It took me quite some time to finish it, but it paid off, since the new owner seems to be very happy with it. ;)

Hi!

First of all I'd like thank everybody who is writing comments on my blog, I'm really happy to get so much feedback! Unfortunatelly I did't have a lot of time to answer to everything and post new stuff, since I was on the road for the last 3 weeks (Germany trip :)). There'll be a lot more to see from now on, I promise. ;)

I've recentliy finished some "dirty work", which means a squad of crimson fist scouts and a unit of wood elves for a friend of mine. I tried to be really quick by using washes (elves) and armypainter (scouts). I think the scouts turned out better, the wood elves are a bit boring imo but good enough for the gaming table anyhow.

Valkyre Diary - Entry 6

Just a short status update today: The Valkyre is almost fully assembled.
Only the weapons are missing because I'm still waiting for that Forgeworld Vendetta conversion-kit to arrive. The cockpit window is missing as well (wouldn't be very clever to glue that on now).

Well well well....
I did some final touches with my favourite weathering tool: the pencil!

I drew it over the edges...

scraped of a bit...

and used my finger for "painting" ^^
(this gives a realistic metalic sheen on the edges you rubb with it)

I also finished the gunners (I'll shoot some better pics later) and put everything together.

Valkyre Diary - Entry 4

Hi again!

The interior is almost finished now. I worked with pigments to get dusty look on the ramps...

...and on the sides

and on the console...
I used umber and burnt umber. Just brush the dry pigments on the surface and blow-off the excess (or leave it ^^). I finally sprayed a coat of matt-varnish to fix them. Army Painter
"anti-shine" is great by the way.

I hope I'll be able to finish the gunners tonight...

News from the front again... ;)
I painted all the buttons and pipes, the floor and the ramp.
I added a watered down wash of Devlan Mud to give the interior an even dirtier look.

Now it's time for the gunners and some experiments with pigments!

Valkyre Diary - Entry 2

I started airbrushing with a thin coat of Kommando Khaki. I usually have a self-made thinner containing 1 part of alcohol to 9 parts of water. I mix this 1:1 with the paint.
I use a 0,2mm noozle so things need to be really thin when spraying.

I then mixed some Ivory (VMC) in my color (any white will do if you don't have this particular one) and sprayed a second coat over it, trying to leave the recesses out, which didn't really work too good, since I'm still a little clumsy with my airbrush. ;)

Now it was time to start weathering the interior. I made a mix of Scorched Brown and Chaos Black (1:1) and used a sponge to apply little chips to the basecoated pieces. The Paint needs
to be watered down with about 50% water for this to work. This technique is very easy and straightforward. It just needs some trys to get te amount of paint on the sponge right.

I painted the lights(?) on the ceiling. I didn't want them to be on, so I painted them as if they were gems. Looks nice, but maybe it's a bit too flashy...

Furthermore I fixed the gunners on corks and primed them (this time with a white overspray).

Valkyre Diary - Entry 1

Hi Folks!

I came up with the idea to make a little step-by-step diary for the valkyreI'm currently working on. This should help to motivate myself and I'll try to show some techniques that might be interesting for one or the other.

Right now I've started to work on the interior. I'll assemble and paint this first, since it would be too difficult to do it once the valkyre is fully assembled.

Here's what happend so far:

The gunners are a little tricky to build without glueing them to the floor, but in the end it worked.
The interior parts, cleaned up and primed black. Normally I would make a second, dusty layer of white to define details and get more "grip" for the paint. But in this case I'll only use black because I'll continue with the airbrush. A black undercoat helps the get basic shadows when airbrushing over it. Once this is dry (in about 5 minutes :)) I'll start with the first layers of paint. So expect to hear from my in the next couple of hours. ;)

Weapons team and Lord Commisar

I did some work on the IG today. I plan on doing a little diorama
with a heavy weapons team and St. Celestine with removable minis.
Here's what I've done so far:

Furthermore I started painting the Lord Commisar. I'm trying to keep larger areas
desaturated. I used grey with a tiny drop of liche purple for the clothes.
Maybe I'll do NMM again on this one.

Converted Nurgle Dread

Hi! This piece was really great fun for me to build and paint. A lot of cool ideas and new techniques that I learned on a very inspiring evening of painting with Jarhead and Muhani (WHHolic). I really went crazy with making the model "dirty". It may be a bit too much though. Painting time was about 8 hours.

be used by the Khorne Berzerkers. I started with doing the inside.

I was thinking that Khorne Berzerkers certainly won't have time to clean their vehicles.

Warriors of Chaos WIP

I've started a little Warriors of Chaos army and
finally found some time between all those
commisions to paint them. There's still a lot
to do (horns, cloaks, leather, weapons and basework)
but I'm quite happy with the overall look.
This is my very first Warhammer Fantasy unit by
the way. ;)

Not sure if I leave the champion like that. I actually
wanted to paint runes on all of them, but it turned
out to be too much work. He looks a bit too flashy now I think.

Layout Changes

Since I finally found the label-funtion, I changed some things in the
blog to make things better-arranged.

There's a section for each army now and I removed the stuff that
didn't lead anywhere, as well as the slideshow on the top, it was
beginning to get boring.

If you have some advice how to improve the blog please tell me,
I'm really bad at layouting! ;)

More Watercolors!

After the good results I achieved on my elf-hero, I couldn't
resist to try watercolors on my weirdboy. This model is so
big and detailed, that I would really save a lot of time.
This time I tried some acrylic basecoats, for example
Knarloc Green for the skin of the weirdboy and goblin
green+ivory for the gretchins.

I need to get some more contrast out of it, but apart from that I'm quite satisfied.

High Elf Hero Experiment

I recently tried out painting with something more unusual....
watercolors!
(Yep, that's the stuff you used when you were in Kindergarden ^^)

I really like the result and will try it on a more serious mini soon.
It's really easy to get smooth transitions, but you have to varnish
it afterwards, 'cause you can always remove the paint with water
(or fingers) again.
This was more like a blending-experiment, I only painted about
3 hours on this mini.
I'd be happy to hear your opinions on this one.

Update:
I glued the mini to the base, painted the hammers and finished the lower part
of the robe. (And I put the new stuff on top from now on, so that you don't have to

Hi folks!

Welcome to The Tower of Heroes.
This is our first serious entry to this blog. To have a good start I will
show you one of my recent projects. A little showbase for en empire
warrior priest for Warhammer Fantasy and some Plague Marines for 40k.

For the showbase I started with some stones that I found outside.
I aded a little bridge that I made out of some toothpicks.

I finally added some air-drying putty to round things up.

Now this had to dry. While I was waiting I finshed some of these guys. Nothing special here,
just white undercoat, basecolors and armypainter "dark tone".
